The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations Announces Newly Constituted Global Steering Committee for the 2022-2023 Term

The Campaign for Greener Arbitration is an initiative to reduce the environmental impact of international arbitrations by promoting awareness of the arbitration community's carbon footprint and producing best practice guides and concise action for better environmental behaviors.

The Campaign began in 2019 as a promise by Lucy Greenwood to manage her arbitrations in an environmentally friendly manner.  She announced her "Green Pledge" to minimise the impact of her arbitration practice on the environment.  The Green Pledge caught the attention of the wider arbitration community and soon hundreds of individuals had signed up to the pledge.  Lucy realised that while the Green Pledge worked for those who practised as arbitrators,  the arbitration community was keen to get behind a broader campaign to address the waste and unnecessary travel that often occurred in international arbitrations.

As a result, she brought together representatives of key stakeholders in international arbitrations to spearhead the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations.  Individuals from arbitration institutions, arbitrators, law firms, hearing venues, third party funders, conference organisers, legal journalists, legal technology providers and corporate clients came together to reinforce the message that we all share responsibility for reducing the carbon footprint of our industry.  Those individuals formed the intial Steering Committee for the Campaign.

Following the launch of the Campaign's Green Protocols on Earth Day 2021, the Campaign called for applications to join a set of six regional sub-committees.  Those regional sub-committees were formed in the course of June 2021 and are now fully operational, led by 14 co-chairs and 4 vice-chairs, and with nearly 150 regional sub-committee members.

Beginning on October 1, 2021, the Campaign newly constituted its Global Steering Committee for the 2022-2023 Term, led by President Lucy Greenwood.  The Global Steering Committee also includes the co-chairs of the regional sub-committees and formalizes a series of five subject-matter sub-committees committed to further carrying forward the work of the Campaign.  Those sub-committees, along with the work of specific directors, promote the strategic advancement of the Campaign within institutions, corporations, law firms, and through partnerships with other initiatives.  They also are engaged in research and policy work, exploring technological innovations, expanding adoption and implementation of the Campaign's Green Protocols, and publicizing the Campaign's initiatives.

The Campaign welcomes all the members of the newly constituted Global Steering Committee, the regional sub-committees, and the five subject-matter sub-committees.  It also thanks all of the Campaign's former officers for their service on the inaugural Steering Committee of the Campaign, many of which are now chairing or serving on one of the regional or subject-matter sub-committees.
